The Internet is a great resource for almost everything, but anyone who spends time online knows there are dangers lurking, waiting to capture you and your unsuspecting browser at each stop in your journey online. You never know when you visit a Website if some malicious program is waiting to creep into your browser and infect your computer. The stuff you can pick up is sometimes harmless advertising, but more often it's dangerous and malicious programs designed to steal your passwords or capture your credit card account numbers or even latch on to your e-mail account and send out spam from your computer and you'll never know it's happening. So, that's why anti-spyware software was developed, and there's lots of freeware and shareware programs to help you stop them cold.
